A 64-bit Windows computer
Windows 10 version 1809 or later, or Windows 11; 64-bit (x64) only. It installs for your user account, without administrator access, and uses Microsoft Edge WebView2 and .NET Framework 4, both part of current Windows. A recent 64-bit PC; 8 GB of memory recommended (provisional).
-
Disk space
About 0.6 GB for the program and about 0.1 GB for FFmpeg on first use. Keep at least 5 GB free for each project; a finished video is roughly the size of its recording.
-
The installer
Downloaded from your order page. Its exact size and SHA-256 checksum are published with each release.

Transcription: ElevenLabs, or your own transcript
Accurate word-timed transcripts come from ElevenLabs with your own key; Fair Copy Edit shows the cost and asks before it starts. If you already have a word-timed transcript, you can use that instead.
-
Editing: Claude, or any AI
Automatic editing uses Claude Code, which comes with Fair Copy Edit, signed in with your own Claude plan or API key. Or use ChatGPT or any AI: copy the request, paste the answer.
-
FFmpeg
Not bundled. On first use, with your permission, Fair Copy Edit downloads it from gyan.dev and checks it against a pinned SHA-256.
-
An internet connection, sometimes
For activation, subscription checks, transcription, AI editing and the FFmpeg download. Everything else works offline.

Your recordings
Any video with a sound track that FFmpeg can read, including .mp4, .mkv, .mov, .m4v, .avi, .webm, .mpg, .mpeg, .ts, .mts, .m2ts and .vob. There’s no size limit, and recordings are only ever read, never changed.
Fair Copy Edit never charges usage fees and never buys anything. Transcription and automatic editing are billed by those providers to your own accounts: ElevenLabs bills its transcription, and Claude uses your Pro or Max plan’s allowance (no extra charge unless extra usage is on) or bills your API key. The copy-and-paste route uses your own AI plan. Cutting, rendering, Quick Fix, subtitles and exports cost nothing extra.
