Steps

You need

  • A project (Lesson 2)
  • Your own ElevenLabs account and API key
  • A small charge to that account: in this lesson’s 2-minute 24-second recording the app’s estimate was US$0.01, at ElevenLabs’ list price of US$0.22 per audio hour. Your ElevenLabs plan’s included hours may cover it.
  1. Once only: click Tools at the top, then ElevenLabs key...
  2. Paste your key into New key (to save or replace) and click Save key, then Close. The key is kept in your computer’s secure store (Windows Credential Manager); the same window can replace it, or remove it with Forget saved key.
  3. Every recording: on the Overview page, click Get the transcript.
  4. A window shows exactly what will happen before anything is sent: only the sound is sent, as a small audio file made on your computer (the video never leaves it); the provider (ElevenLabs); the length; and the Estimated cost. If you’re happy with it, click Approve sending audio. Cancel (send nothing) sends nothing.
  5. Wait a moment while it transcribes (11 seconds for this 2.4-minute recording). The Transcript ready window shows how many words were found and whether the automatic checks passed. Click OK.

You’ll know it worked when

The Overview’s next step reads Transcript ready: edit with AI with the number of words, and the Transcript stage shows Finished.

Good to know

  • “Automatic checks passed” means no measurable fault was found. It doesn’t prove every word is right.
  • The transcript is saved with the project. Using it again costs nothing; only a new transcription asks for approval and is charged again.
  • A readable copy is saved in your project’s folder 4 NOTES FOR YOU TO READ.

Lesson three: getting a transcript with ElevenLabs. A very accurate transcript service, which is why we’re keeping it. Fair Copy Edit sends only the sound of your recording, shows you the price first, and gives you back every word.

First, a one-time setup. Fair Copy Edit uses your own ElevenLabs account. It’s very cheap. So it needs your ElevenLabs key. Open Tools and click ElevenLabs key. Paste your key into this box and save it. It’s kept in your computer’s secure store, and you only need to do this once.

Now go back to the Overview. Step one. Click Get the transcript.

Before anything is sent, Fair Copy Edit shows you exactly what will happen. Only the sound is sent, never the video. And here’s the estimated cost. For this recording, it’s about one cent. Wow. Step two. If you’re happy with it, click Approve sending audio.

The transcription only takes a moment. When it’s done, Fair Copy Edit tells you how many words it found, and that its automatic checks passed. Click OK.

The transcript is ready: 350 words, and the automatic checks passed. Next comes the edit. But first, you’ll tell Fair Copy Edit what the video is for. That’s the next lesson.

Next up, lesson four: the video brief.
